It is significant that in recent years, the presentations of TÍSCAR ESPADAS have been accompanied by the scent of incense and alhucema, they have materialised in a dense, shady – almost gloomy – atmosphere, it is understandable to draw a parallel between the brand and a certain darkness with Renaissance aftertaste. By contrast, in this CHAPTER VI, the incense has been replaced by the scent of JASMINE. The cold wind has given way to a light breeze, creating a softer, cosier atmosphere. As a result, it is particularly encouraging to see TÍSCAR ESPADAS heading into a new chapter with a special touch of brightness, introducing some basic and majestic pieces.
Tíscar Espadas goes back to her origins, back to that need to tell imaginative, fun stories – a mixture of dreams, fantasy and nostalgia – with her new collection, in each of her garments you can feel that poetic charm, that joy of living, feeling and imagining. Throughout the collection, you can find softly treated twills, the finest quality linen, Italian striped cotton, wool and silk tops, and French denim made on 19th century machinery. The subtle earthy colour palette ranges from a velvety olive green to a virile cinnabar red. “After two years of transition and adaptation, we have finally settled back in Madrid; this moment of having a stable base again has probably been reflected in the collection,” says the designer.
“Please choose your character. There are many and we have only unveiled a few of them”. The cover of the most recent TÍSCAR ESPADAS lookbook. “We don’t want to be limited to a specific era or style; we constantly work with a variety of references that have accompanied us for years or are the memory of a brief moment, images that awakened something inside us, that we imagined or that tell about how we feel.” For the CHAPTER VI representation, they collaborated with Paris-based stylist and art director Pierre-Alexandre Fillaire. The lookbook photos were taken by Adriana Roslin and the campaign photos by Yao Yuan.
It wouldn’t be a TÍSCAR ESPADAS collection without intertwining a memory of the landscape where the olive groves merge with the infinite clear blue sky. The warm, heavenly scent of jasmine creates an atmosphere of pure bliss and along with this, the fleetingness of its beauty brings memories to the surface “My grandmother used to collect the still closed jasmine flowers in a safety pin, so that at nightfall, they would open, thus setting her clothes ablaze with scent” This anecdote inspired her to design a set of jewellery consisting of ceramic jasmine flowers and silver pins, ear ornaments and chokers. These pieces were made in collaboration with the talented hands of goldsmith Carla Souto and ceramist Ángela González.
CHAPTER VI refers back to familiar forms and new, technically novel elements. It expands long, curved lines into voluminous pockets, insists on the line by accentuating it with external French seams or seemingly “unfinished” edges that reflect the way the garments are constructed. Characteristic details such as the small hidden pockets, the soft organic cotton linings or the corozo buttons sewn on one by one should not be overlooked. As in the previous CHAPTER V, Tíscar Espadas collaborates again with Carmen Peraita, for the knitwear.
The physical fashion show of CHAPTER VI in Spain will take place on 7 and 8 September at her studio and shop in Madrid. “It will definitely not be a classic presentation. We want to give people the possibility to experience the garments with all their senses, whereas with the catwalk shows of the last few years we felt, to a certain extent, that we were too distant from the people”.
