After two weeks of speculation and unravelling the clues dropped on social media, we can finally confirm: Rosalía is back on the music scene. She’s doing it in a big way with a collaboration with Lisa, the Thai star of Blackpink. The long-awaited track New Woman is indeed the same song Rosalía gave us a sneak preview of in a recent Instagram LIVE, and it promises to become a must-have for the end of the summer.
A pop cut processed in English with clear echoes of rap and hip-hop from the 2000s, which stands out for the iconic intervention of the Catalan singer right in the middle of the track. The song, with a sound inspired by the Y2K revival, explores female empowerment as a central theme. The production, co-signed by Max Martin and Ilya, also features Tove Lo as backing vocalist and co-writer. New Woman also marks Lisa’s second solo single at this stage, where she has reintroduced herself as Rockstar.
On the track, both artists present themselves as power figures. The message of empowerment is embodied in verses like Lisa’s: ‘Here I go. Bangin‘ it, bangin’ it, wanna crack these walls. Bangin‘ it, bangin’ it, wanna echo through the halls. Pullin‘ up, fresh face, brand new day’. In turn, Rosalía joins in with the energy that characterises her, taking up verses already anticipated: ‘For all that I am, I can frontear. Not for what I have, they always give it to me. My energy is immaculate. Low profile, you’re out. I live to sing, I don’t sing to live. Not even in an era will it be flop in my future. I’m Rosalia, I only know how to serve. The starry night, so be it. Until the early hours of the morning, so be it’.
The music video, directed by Dave Meyers – responsible for iconic visuals such as Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso, Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy and Ariana Grande’s God is a woman – is full of aesthetic references to the 2000s: mobiles with lids, digital cameras, vintage cars and text messages that evoke that era. On screen, Lisa and Rosalía dazzle in leather-laden outfits, fur coats, leopard prints, sequins and glitter, flashy sunglasses and XXL nails.
With New Woman, Rosalía marks her return in 2024 after the break that followed the Motomami Tour, which ended in July 2023, and her last musical collaboration, Oral, with Björk at the end of the same year. After eight months of waiting, this preview is the first sign of the new chapter in the Catalan artist’s career. Now, we can only wait for the official announcement of her next album, while we celebrate the fact that, this time, ‘R4 IS COMING’.
