Stone Island offers 100 limited edition pieces in 100 different colours

‘Prototype Research_Series 09’ is conceived as the brand’s most radical space.

One hundred garments. One hundred colours. Unrepeatable experiments. Pieces constructed from fabrics, processes and treatments that have not yet been industrialised. Open trials that demonstrate what is technically possible.

This time, the object of research is not a traditional technical fabric, but something much more delicate: knitwear. For the first time in its history, Stone Island subjects a knitted garment to an air lamination process, a pioneering technology that reinterprets knitwear as high-performance outerwear. A brand tradition taken to new territory.

The starting point is a reversible chenille cotton cardigan with a hood. On top of this seemingly soft and domestic base, engineering comes into play. Each of the 100 pieces comes in a different colour. No two are alike. 100 exclusive shades were developed, ranging from vibrant colours to muted tones and mixed hues, making each garment a unique chromatic object.

The technical operation is very precise: a waterproof and breathable HDry® membrane is bonded to the knit layer using a three-dimensional lamination process, the first of its kind to be applied to a knit garment. The finished cardigan is placed on an inflatable mannequin, with the membrane positioned just underneath. The mannequin is then inflated with hot air, forcing a perfect bond between the two layers.

During this process, slight irregularities appear on the surface, small visible tensions between the fabric and the membrane that make each garment even more unique. The extreme fineness of the membrane allows the structure of the knit, the colour and the texture to remain completely visible, preserving the three-dimensional character of the chenille yarn.
