The Rebel Ragers Tour by Kid Cudi got off to a strong start, but it didn’t take long for it to become embroiled in a social media–worthy controversy. The unexpected focal point was M.I.A., who, during her set as the opening act in Dallas, chose to take the microphone not just to perform, but to make political remarks that did not land well with the crowd. Amid boos, the artist described herself as a “brown Republican”, prompting an immediate and noticeably tense reaction in the venue.
The most uncomfortable moment came when she referenced her track Illegal, suggesting that some people in the audience could be undocumented immigrants. Rather than sparking reflection, the comment further inflamed the crowd. Within hours, clips from the show were circulating widely online, amplifying the controversy and placing the tour — and Cudi — firmly at the centre of the digital conversation.
The headliner’s response was swift. Taking to his social media, Kid Cudi explained that he had made it clear from the outset that he did not want any offensive content in his shows. According to the rapper, he had even warned M.I.A.’s team about this beforehand. However, after receiving numerous complaints from fans, he made a decisive call: she would no longer appear on the remaining tour dates. “I’m not going to allow anyone on my tour to make comments that upset my fans,” he stated.

Far from dialling things down, M.I.A. stood her ground. On her own social media, she defended her position and made it clear she would not apologise, framing her remarks within her broader history of political views and her support for figures such as Donald Trump. She even posted the provocative line “rebellion is cancelled”, alongside the caption “the Epstein list is less offensive”. Her response reinforces a narrative that has followed her for years: an artist unafraid to provoke, even if it means losing her place on stage… at least for now.
M.I.A. also accuses Rosalía of imitating her spiritual era and aesthetic.
