Presented at the beginning of last week, the collection is a perfect example of Jean Paul Gaultier’s ability to approach streetwear.
Born in 1952 in the suburbs of Paris, Gaultier began his career at the age of 18 working under the direction of Pierre Cardin. His career continued with designers Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou in the 1970s, before releasing his first collection in 1976.
As he was building collections, the industry dubbed him the enfant terrible of fashion – “rebellious boy“. The use of “unconventional materials, his sharp tailoring skills and a truly eclectic sensibility,” according to Supreme, have made Gaultier a unique designer in the history of this industry.
Jean Paul Gaultier’s work was used as costumes for Madonna’s “Blond Ambition” tour – her daughter Lourdes stars in the lookbook – as well as Luc Besson’s 1997 science fiction blockbuster, The Fifth Element. Jean Paul is one of those designers who break down the barrier between fashion and art.

Gaultier is, to this day, recognized as one of the creators of modern street style and one of the most influential designers within the fashion industry.
For this season SS19, Supreme and Jean Paul Gaultier have collaborated on a collection of 17 pieces that once again unite haute couture and street, breaking down the few remaining frontiers. In addition to the clothes, Chukka Vans and Era Vans join the collaboration that will go on sale on April 11.
