Just when we thought we had seen it all in this fashion month, Alexander McQueen has taken us back to London to present his SS23. Inspired by the work of Hieronymous Bosch, Sarah Burton has masterfully brought McQueen back to life with a dreamlike and elegant proposal.
The show transported us to the now-familiar giant bubble-shaped greenhouse set up at the Old Royal Naval College by the Thames. A year ago, the brand inflated exactly the same bubble at the top of a 10-story parking garage in Tobacco Dock for its SS22 runway show.
A spectacular setting where, as the sun was beating down, models paraded in low-slung pants, tailored blazers and close-fitting pieces. Volumes and tailoring have been worked with great precision, with disruptive cuts and adjustments in certain areas to celebrate the female body.
The collection has been marked by two elements: the eye as a symbol of consciousness, and the intriguing paintings of Hieronymous Bosch. The eye appears as a second skin, embroidered, printed or in sequins and crystals. These pieces with the eye motif have entered into dialogue with the Renaissance paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. Impressively evoked through dresses and corsetry, the result is dark and beautiful in equal measure.
Alexander McQueen SS23 collection is the perfect example of how to interpret tailoring and create something intriguing and beautiful. Sarah Burton has managed to make a nod to the late designer intrinsically striking in form and content.
