Alexander Wang AW18 – Business as usual

From the bar to the boardroom, Alexander Wang’s final AW18 show was held at the old Condé Nast office, where Wang began his career as an intern at Vogue.

Maren H. Anscheidt |  NY // From the bar to the boardroom, Alexander Wang’s (@alexanderwangny) final AW18 show (in accordance with the CFDA schedule) was held at the old Condé Nast office, where Wang began his career as an intern at Vogue. This time around, the matrix met boardroom ready with killer power suits, stockings and eyewear reading CEO, and long leather trenches putting us back in 1997.

Upon entering, a sign reading ‘AWG: Serving the Industry Since 2004’, on the 21st floor, guests sat grouped off in cubicles, as models strode the beige checkered carpet floors of the old office alongside strutting stiletto sounds and house music fit for a BOSS. Looking back on the location of Wang’s previous shows (Bushwick, NY and Harlem, NY) — leaving critics with a handful to say — the venue this season was central, and the designer even went as far as to prompt invitees via email to show up punctually. This notable choice of venue had those who had ever passed the doors of Condé Nast to regard Wang’s show as bold, professional and a tribute to the high times in fashion.

Heavy crediting to the 80s/90s with sleek skinny frame Matrix-esque eyewear, new and improved fanny packs, and an item nobody thought could make a comeback, ladies, dig through your bathroom drawers and pull out that claw comb clip, because they are back and boy are they the cherry on the fit. To compliment these espionage authoritative looks, eyewear, shirts and sheer tights were emblazoned with the letters ‘CEO’ in handpicked rhinestones.

A few days prior to the show the designer posted a selfie to the gram wearing the sunglasses with the CEO symbol, “When you’re not the CEO but still wanna dress like one,” read the caption. (Last fall Wang resigned as CEO of his company and passed along the position to Lisa Gersh, formerly at Goop)

We were served up ‘Boss Lady’ with every look. After the show Wang conveyed his appreciation to the female figures around him, his mom, his sister-in-law, Gersh, and female senior staff. “I’m blessed and honored to work with such incredible, smart, powerful women,” he said. “It felt timely to do a collection that reflects a different part of my life, everyone knows the partying me, but I actually go to work more than I party.

Say hello to modern day corporate, she’s fierce.
