The Mexican artist created a life-size ceramic sculpture that is a compelling, almost human presence.
The anthropomorphic form of ‘I only know what I have seen’ simulates both a figurative and abstract work, and has been created through the intrinsic use of thousands of individual ceramic profusions. These small-sized spikes make up five interlocking pieces, which have been combined with an almost architectural intent and precision.
Andrés Anza won the prestigious award after being selected from among 30 finalists by an exquisite jury composed of leading figures from the worlds of design, architecture, journalism, criticism and museum curatorship. Members included Magdalene Odundo, Minsuk Cho, Olivier Gabet and Abraham Thomas.
In addition, three special awards were given to Miki Asai (Japan) for ‘Still Life’; Emmanuel Boos (France) for ‘Coffee Table Cosme un lego’; and Heechan Kim ‘#16’.
