Anthony Vaccarello, director creativo de Saint Laurent, ha decidido rendir homenaje a la obra de Robert Mapplethorpe a través de una exposición de sus obras originales expuestas en las tiendas Saint Laurent Rive Droite de París y Los Ángeles en colaboración con la Fundación Robert Mapplethorpe.
In an effort to challenge the standards of classical aesthetics, Robert Mapplethorpe mastered light, shadow and form through still-life compositions, male and female nudes and portraits. These are some of his favourite subjects and the experimentation for which he is widely known. His work contributed to a new perception of photographic art, and at the same time elevated art photography to the level of respect and attention paid to sculpture and painting.
His vast, provocative and powerful oeuvre has made him one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Today, Mapplethorpe is represented by galleries and is in the collections of the world’s leading museums. His legacy lives on through the work of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, which he established in 1988 to promote his artistic vision and support photography on an institutional level, enabling photographic exhibitions, publications and acquisitions.
The Mapplethorpe Foundation also fulfils its additional mandate to support HIV/AIDS research, care and education, as the artist died in March 1989 from AIDS. In this way, Saint Laurent Rive Droite Paris and Los Angeles will host an exclusive selection of original artworks by Robert Mapplethorpe. The exhibitions will include silver gelatin photographs and Polaroids of still life portraits and nudes, courtesy of the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Paris and Morán Morán Gallery in Los Angeles.
In addition, in connection with the exhibitions, Anthony Vaccarello has designed a unique lifestyle collection in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. This exclusive limited edition includes bags, leather goods, clothing, porcelain items and pillows. All the products in this capsule are illustrated with a photograph of the artist and are available at Saint Laurent Rive Droite shops in Paris and Los Angeles.
