Caleido is hosting an ambitious public art project by Urvanity Projects that will turn the north of the city into the epicentre of the latest art. The project is free and open to all and includes works by some of the most important national and international artists of the moment. Caleido is the new shopping and leisure area of Madrid’s Financial District and one of the most important real estate developments in the capital.

In 1972, the first public art project was inaugurated with the Open Air Sculpture Museum, which presented 17 large sculptures as an example of the art of the time. Just two kilometres away, on the Paseo de la Castellana, the installations, murals and sculptures present in Caleido are the testimony of a new generation of artists who are coming on strong. There are 11 installations that take over the open-air public spaces in this new business complex called Cuatro Torres Business Area.
“The common thread of the project is the artists’ work with colour,” explains Sergio Sancho, director of Urvanity Projects. “This was an important point, also because of the area where it has been developed. It is a space for all kinds of public and colour is a very attractive, very plastic part, which functions as a point of union between all the works and facilitates the approach to them. They are also very powerful pieces, with a lot of power of attraction, which will make people want to visit them”.
A journey through “the latest”
“Caleido is the largest public art project that has been developed in Madrid in recent decades”. It brings together 11 national and international artists, with a selection of pieces of great visual power, in an unprecedented location. Some of them will become the new icons of the city. “On a global level, we found a similar project in Miami’s Design District, where there have been murals, fixed and permanent installations by artists and today it is a must-see place on any art circuit,” Sancho points out. “To date, Madrid has not had an artistic project of this magnitude.

The selection of the pieces has revolved around two aspects: movement and sustainability. “This can be reflected by the use of colour or through the different points of view that an installed piece can generate. Sustainability is one of the pillars on which the work of several of the participating artists is developed, whether through the materials used, the themes represented or the reflection to which they lead us”. The project includes the installation of permanent sculptures and murals of different formats.
About the artists
Nano4814 intervenes with Soft Limits, an iconic sculpture in polyurethane resin and fibreglass; Tomislav Topic creates Resolution, a suspended metal mesh sculpture; Lukas Ulmi intervenes with Desafío, a large format sculpture in corten steel tube; SpY, creates Esfera, a spherical sculpture made with convex mirrors from traffic signs; Bordalo II intervenes with a large relief mural made with reused coloured plastics; Boa Mistura creates Utopia, a mural in acrylic paint; Agostino Iacurci, intervenes with Untitled, a mural in acrylic paint; Sabek creates Gatos de Madrid, a mural in acrylic paint and spray paint; Thiago Mazza intervenes with Colección tropical 08, a mural in acrylic paint, as do Maya Hayuk and Moneyless.
