Balenciaga has announced that it will show its next Autumn/Winter 2021 collection through a video game that is due to be launched on December 6th. The news has reached the whole world today and has segmented opinions within the industry. Some people praise the proposal; others have expressed their nostalgia by understanding that there will be no parade on the catwalks.
Creative director Demna Gvasalia confirmed that “Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow” will set a new record for the “volumetric video project ever made”. Without a doubt, the name refers to an ironic parody of a video game title that is perfect for describing this 2020.
“Afterworld’s narrative focuses on mythological pasts and futures projected through timeless archetypes and speculative images. The world may seem decrepit at first, but it is far from being a dystopian vision, showing instead the slow return to a healthier balance between nature and industry,” Balenciaga announced.
For the fashion house, the launch of this new project means being more digitally immersive. The current situation has forced the firms to seek new ways of interpreting their collections. With this, Balenciaga will overcome any barrier by putting an end to the traditional model of a fashion show on the catwalk.
Although some have been skeptical of this new proposal, Denma will know how to win over its followers. Now, the rules of the game have changed.
