New photos shared by Architectural Digest reveal the interior of Barbie’s dream home built on the Warner Bros. set outside London.
The pink fantasy world Greta Gerwig has built for the film is one of the aspects that has generated the most hype among audiences. Production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer have been inspired by the mid-century modernism of Palm Springs, including architect Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House. The director has commented that the houses in Barbieland have no walls or doors, “Dreamhouses assume you never have anything you wish was private; there’s nowhere to hide.”
“I wanted the pinks to be very bright and everything to be almost too much,” Gerwig added. “The ‘childishness’ was paramount” to evoke the feeling she has never forgotten about Barbie since she was a child. To achieve this Barbie world, so much pink paint was necessary that it led to an international shortage of Rosco brand fluorescent paint. Rosco’s vice president of global marketing, Lauren Proud, commented, “We did run out of paint. There were shortages and we gave them as much as we could.”
The film hits theaters July 21. In case you missed it, this will be its plot as we could see in the full trailer.
