The Canadian artist returns to construct this new body of work, to be released on June 28, through a raw photographic process that explores the transformation of figurative qualities by fusing the right tools with instinct and conceptualized environments. In this collection, Cole once again reformulates the questions that give meaning and structure to his photographic series: how do you paint a timeless picture? How do you capture the sensation of weightlessness in an image?
His ethereal photography takes on a quintessential pictorial quality here with the transformation of the figure as the predominant theme in his work, again staged in an aquatic environment and in a darkroom where he creates tintype images using the “wet collodion” technique commonly used more than 150 years ago. He captures the beauty of femininity and movement by giving a contemporary, digital twist to the traditional tintype technique in two physically separate but overlapping images, projecting a kind of three-dimensional ritual of light and shadow.
In “Between Worlds“, Cole then exposes her characteristic romantic and timeless vision of the world through a series of snapshots in which her underwater photography occupies the central place in the collection, but also an experimental vision in different scenarios in which a cast of women generate a dance around movement, diffusion and expression.
