Davide Renne is the new creative director of Moschino

The rumours about her possible choice have been going on for days: today comes the official confirmation from the fashion house.

Davide Renne is the new creative director of Moschino

Tuscan-born designer Davide Renne will officially become Moschino’s Creative Director in November 2023.

Following Jeremy Scott’s departure in 2023 after a decade at the helm of the Italian fashion house’s creative direction, the leadership role was left vacant. For the SS24 collection celebrating the brand’s 40th anniversary at Milan Fashion Week, the in-house team was tasked with leading the mandate as there was still no name on the table. Specifically, it was four of the most influential names in fashion – and friends of the house – Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, Lucia Liu and Katie Grand.

Now Moschino has revealed who will follow Jeremy Scott’s reign: Italian designer Davide René. His mandate will take effect on 1 November 2023 and he will make his debut with the Autumn-Winter 2024/2025 collection during Milan Fashion Week next February. The stylist will oversee the women’s, men’s and accessories collections of the Moschino line. Renne is more than qualified after having headed Gucci’s womenswear department for more than two decades. Davide worked with Alessandro Michele and Frida Giannini after four years with number 21 founder Alessandro Dell’Acqua.

Massimo Ferretti, CEO of Moschino’s parent company Aeffe, said: “Today we welcome Davide to the Moschino family. We have all been impressed by Davide’s extremely sophisticated vision of the power of fashion to create a living dialogue with the world around us and by his deep understanding of the legacy of the House of Moschino and our codes. He is a brilliant designer and a special human being: Franco used to say that bad manners are the only true bad taste, and in meeting Davide, I have been struck, not only by his obvious talent, but also by his kindness, his sensitivity. We are sure he will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Moschino, a global house with an Italian heart and a truly unique DNA in the luxury industry.”

“Franco Moschino had a nickname for his design studio: la sala giochi, the playroom,” says Davide Renne. “This resonates deeply with me: what fashion, especially Italian fashion, and the House of Moschino above all, can achieve with its enormous power, must be achieved with a sense of playfulness, of joy. I am well aware of the honour that Mr Ferretti, a gentleman who has been almost paternal in his ability to listen and establish a dialogue during our meetings, has bestowed on me by taking over the House founded by one of the greatest minds in fashion. So, thank you, Mr Ferretti, for giving me the keys to your playroom. I can’t wait to get started, we will have fun together”.

Davide Renne’s appointment comes amid a catharsis in which a host of creative directors are stepping down from their posts, giving triumphant entry to new designers. Sarah Burton recently ended her 26-year tenure at Alexander McQueen and showed her final collection at Paris Fashion Week. Seán McGirr, a Central Saint Martins graduate, will take her place, while Chemena Kamali will join Chloé, and Walter Chiapponi has left Tod’s. Just as a new era begins for Gucci with Sabato de Sarno.
