Desigual welcomes spring with a completely sustainable collection designed by the young French creative Alphonse Maitrepierre.
Maitrepierre was inspired by the image of the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way – as a metaphor for destruction and universal creation – first captured in 2022. From this snapshot, he has been able to develop prints reminiscent of various nebulae and galaxies.
Two other important concepts that stand out in this collection are solarpunk – as a movement opposed to dystopia, which seeks to build an optimistic future with technology and sustainability as its backbone – and jugaad – a Hindi word that means “innovative arrangement” and explains the processes of repairing or developing products with the minimum impact on the environment. These philosophies connect Maitrepierre‘s creative perspective with a foundational fact of Desigual.
“In 1984, Thomas Meyer himself, the founder of Desigual, created the Iconic jacket from several pairs of old jeans…. That spirit reflects exactly where we are now,” says the young designer. “I think there is something very pure and poetic in creating, in innovating, in reformulating codes and making an impact,” he adds.
The collection is designed entirely with sustainable fibres, a must for Maitrepierre and a must for Desigual. The garments are made with organic cotton or BCI and Naia, a fibre derived from cellulose. Even the smallest detail is taken care of: the buttons on denim garments are recycled, as is the back label on jeans. The leather accessories are certified as sustainable by the Leather Working Group.
