1. Game of thrones in fashion houses
This year a few fashion houses have changed their creative directions. And since nothing is more appetising than a debut, everyone has been on the lookout for what the new heads of the brands had in store.
Sabato De Sarno made his debut at the helm of Gucci after the departure of Alessandro Michelle, Peter Hawkings replaced Tom Ford himself at his eponymous brand, Peter Do took the helm at Helmut Lang, Pharrell made his triumphant entrance at Louis Vuiton…
And although they have been great debuts for the new cool kids of the fashion houses, 2023 has also been marked by great farewells. In addition to the farewell to Alessandro Michelle, the fashion world had to say goodbye to Jeremy Scott at Moschino after a decade at the helm. Rhuigi Villaseñor left Bally amidst financial controversies with the brand’s management and LUDOVIC de Saint Sernin left Ann Demelemeuster after just one season at the creative helm. Likewise, MSGM creatives Serhat Isik and Benjamin A. Huseby left Trussardi and Charles de Vilmorin said goodbye to Rochas.
Among the most surprising departures were Gabriela Hearst’s departure from Chloé, Sarah Burton’s departure from Alexander McQueen to make way for the young Seán McGirr and the recent announcement of Matthew Williams’ departure from Givenchy.
2. Pharrell’s debut in Louis Vuitton
Pharrell Williams’ debut was unparalleled in terms of visibility by any show at men’s Fashion Week in June. Not only did he close the Pont Neuf in Paris and put on a show in every sense of the word, but he also put on an exhibition of his power with all the guests at the big event. Beyoncé and JAY-Z, Rihanna and Rocky, Kim Kardashian, LeBron James, Tyler the Creator and many more of Williams’ friends showed up in Paris to support their friend.
3. Sofia Richie’s wedding, the standard bearer of the Old money and Quiet Luxury aesthetics
If there is one wedding that has marked the year, it is Sofia Richie’s wedding. It’s not that the wedding was spectacular, but it was the perfect opportunity to give Sofia the title of It Girl of the moment and also to witness a perfect representation of the styles of the moment, Old Money and Quiet Luxury. Lionel Richie’s daughter boasts classic taste brought into modern times.
4. Barbie Fever
With a turnover of over 1 billion, Barbie has been one of the most successful films of the year. But if there’s one thing about the film that has made an impact on the industry, it’s the looks that Margot Robbie rocked during the promotion. The actress, under the tutelage of her stylist Andrew Mukamal, wore looks by Valentino, Prada, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood etc. as a tribute not only to the film she stars in but also to a historical icon such as Barbie.
La fiebre no ha parado ahí, porque aprovechando el tirón todas las marcas han querido hacer sus colaboraciones con la muñeca más famosa del mundo.
5. The Corteiz Conquest
The mass hysteria that Corteiz has unleashed throughout the year with its multiple launches and special marketing strategies, the ongoing collaboration with Nike and much more, has positioned Clint’s brand as the brand of reference in hypebeast culture, unseating Supreme. Will it follow suit in the new year?
6. Phoebe Philo‘s comeback
If we all mourned Phoebe Philo’s departure from Cèline in 2017, when in 2021 the designer announced she would return with her eponymous brand, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Finally, this October saw the unveiling of her first collection, which remains true to the designer’s iconic minimalism, and has everyone in the industry obsessed.
7. The shortest fashion show in history, by Marc Jacobs
If there’s one thing Marc Jacobs knows how to do, it’s surprise, and without a doubt in his latest collection he knew how to turn heads by putting on the shortest fashion show in history. In just 180 seconds, 29 models paraded through the New York Public Library.
In addition, the designer decided to present the show with a note written by ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence that did not give any specific details about the collection or the brand.
8. Linda, Naomi, Christy, Cindy, the original supermodels come together on the big screen
The most sought-after supermodels in history hit the big screen on 20 September. Premiering on Apple TV, the docuseries ‘The Supermodels’ takes an intimate look at the careers of Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.
9. Skepta debuts with his MAINS brand on the London catwalk
Skepta founded MAINS in 2017, but until this year when the grime king decided to make his catwalk debut, the brand was on a four-year hiatus. The debut has marked a before and after for the brand, and we’re delighted.
10. Rihanna’s Super Bowl
With the surprise announcement of her second pregnancy, Rihanna returned to the stage wearing an epic look in passion red. Wearing a Loewe jumpsuit with a bustier on the chest like a breastplate and a red leather maxi coat by Alaïa, the Bitch Better Have My Money singer broke the internet.
