Fashion Week Mexico: this is how the 40th edition ended with Aitor Goikoetxea

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Mexico comes to an end with a closing day, which included 6 fashion shows: 5 of national brands and one more of international weight by the Spanish Aitor Goikoetxea.

The Basque-born talent arrived on the Mexican catwalks with his firm Aitorgoikoetxea, after winning the “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent” competition with his “Adarrak” collection, as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid. This achievement earned him an appearance at MBFWMx, bringing with him the same winning series, inspired by various traditional Basque costumes that were once used with a sense of ritual.

The idea of the creative born in 1999 revolves around the line between man and beast, where the vulnerability of tradition, Basque rituals, intimacy, fears, past and present collide. With “Adarrak”, Goikoetxea opted for a catwalk of 18 all-male looks, although many of the garments are unisex. The fact that the pieces were mostly created with discontinued vintage fabrics from the 60s and 70s stands out, in a sustainable approach.

“Knitwear also forms a very important part of the collection, working it manually with thicker yarns, digitally for more delicate and semi-transparent knitwear, and with hand-woven mohair blankets and manual tie dye,” says the Spanish firm headed by Aitor Goikoetxea, whose proposal was complemented on the catwalk with jewellery handcrafted in porcelain and resins by the architect Omar Miranda.

“It’s an honour to be part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Mexico catwalk thanks to the ‘Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent’ award, with which I can show my work in markets as interesting as the Mexican one and thus have more international visibility. A great opportunity to continue building my own universe of nostalgia and customs, and to develop my passion for art, fabrics and colour, and for the freedom of creation”, said Aitor.

The designer Aitor Goikoetxea won the 21st edition of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent with his new collection, “Adarrak”.
