Since its birth in 2012, FOOTDISTRICT has been characterised by the way it has been ahead of its time and has forged its own destiny through unique actions.
To commemorate these 10 years of history, the international retailer based in León is carrying out a series of unique events and launches, including the inauguration of its own virtual world Outer Shelf; or the recent celebration of The MAD Buzzer, a unique event in Madrid in which the most representative elements of Street Basket were the protagonists.
This December, FOOTDISTRICT surprises again with ‘Ready for good luck’, its new capsule collection with New Era.This is the first in a series of collaborations to commemorate their 10th anniversary. A collection that acts as a reminder of the new phase they are entering: that new stage of having passed the 10-year barrier.
This unforgettable collaboration with the famous New York brand consists of a Varsity jacket and two models of the popular 9FIFTY caps. Two items that undoubtedly stand out for their profound symbolism. Their inspiration for this collection? The concept of time, destiny and, of course, the future.
Tradition, modernity… and the wheel of fortune
If FOOTDISTRICT has shown us anything over the last ten years, it is that it leaves nothing to chance. On the contrary, every step of the way is carefully thought out and planned.
The iconic retailer, recognised for two consecutive years as one of the fastest growing companies in Europe by the Financial Times, has managed to combine traditional values with the most modern means and techniques to achieve success. This fusion between tradition and modernity is evident in the materials chosen for the garments in this collection: a perfect combination of the traditional tweed fabric with a more technological tone, provided by nylon.
The new era on which FOOTDISTRICT embarks sets the “wheel of fortune” spinning again, which is magically represented by the tenth tarot card, the one that symbolises the eternal cycle of life, evolution, change and chance. These elements transport us to the duality between destiny and free will that so often, when embarking on a new project or cycle, makes us question what role fate plays and what role is left in our hands.
A brilliant concept in two streetwear icons
‘Ready for good luck’ is the perfect example of how to translate a brilliant concept into two legendary streetwear items: the Varsity jacket and the cap, undisputed icons of urban culture.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, the name ‘Varsity’ is nothing more than a contraction of ‘University’. This piece represents, therefore, the living image of youth, community and belonging to values. Moreover, the medieval origin of this institution connects us with the imagery of the tarot card that inspires the collection and decorates this garment: the wheel of fortune and the three beings that appear around it.
Naturally, this collaboration with New Era brings back the New York brand’s most recognisable garment: the cap. This essential accessory of streetculture since the 80s and 90s, when it was worn by the most prominent figures of hip hop, could not be missing from the collection thanks to its strong symbolism. The upper part of the cap refers us back to the concept of the tarot card, thanks to its six-spoke “wheel” in which luck stops in a single panel, symbolising the ups and downs of destiny. This concept is realised through the broken line that illustrates the herringbone of the tweed fabric and refers to the crowned figure of the card.
FOOTDISTRICT is playing its cards again
For FOOTDISTRICT, the tenth anniversary represents the end of the decade with which the game began, and the start of a new game where the stakes are still high.
‘Ready for good luck’ refers us, through its common elements, to the representation of cycles and the inherent randomness of life; to how behind the risk involved in undertaking is the vision of someone who tries to create himself, whose life is not written.
At FOOTDISTRICT they want to keep playing the game for at least another ten years. And although the board will dictate the next move, they will play as long as they are “ready for good luck”.
Want to get your hands on the collection? The raffle is already active on footdistrict.com for VERIFIED users. It will also be available in shops in Madrid and Barcelona from tomorrow, 14 December, with a special window display for the occasion.
