The César Awards, France’s version of the Oscars, will exclude any actor, director or filmmaker facing a possible prison sentence for sexual assault for its 2023 ceremony.
The move comes in response to one man in particular, French actor Sofiane Bennacer, who has been banned from attending the ceremony for alleged rape. He was previously considered one of the favourites to receive an award for the film “Forever Young“, but was removed from the list of possible nominees after his accusation became known last year.
The institution has announced that anyone under investigation for violent crimes, especially of a sexual nature, will not be allowed to attend the ceremony. The Academy will vote soon on whether the change in eligibility criteria will be made permanent. “Out of respect for the victims, it has been decided not to highlight people who may have been implicated by the judiciary in acts of violence,” the organisation said in a statement.
