Keeping skin beautiful and healthy without relatively visible pores is possible with good masks (e.g. clay or activated charcoal) or professional treatments such as chemical peeling, laser or microdermabrasion.
Pores are small openings in the skin that allow perspiration and the secretion of sebum, a natural oil that keeps the skin hydrated and protected. However, various factors such as genetics, ageing, sun damage and the accumulation of oil and dirt can make them appear larger and more prominent. Fortunately, there are solutions to combat this problem:
1/ Deep cleansing: This is a fundamental step in skin care, especially when it comes to reducing the appearance of pores. But to get good results, you have to do it effectively: “We must choose a good cleanser for our skin type, with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide if it is very oily or has acne, or without fragrance or irritating alcohols if it is sensitive” – explains Esperanza Sáenz, image manager at Nezeni Cosmetics, who also recommends cleansing tools such as facial brushes and konjac sponges, as well as other products such as toners formulated with astringent ingredients.
2/ Exfoliation: By removing dead cells from the epidermis, you prevent the build-up of debris that can clog pores and make them more noticeable: “It is best to use chemical exfoliators that use acids such as alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids to dissolve dead cells. They are ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. In addition to glycolic and lactic acids, I recommend physical exfoliators, as they contain very effective micro-granules, in this case better on more resistant skin” – advises Esperanza Sáenz.
3/ Moisturising: This is a vital aspect of skincare, especially if you’re looking to minimise the appearance of pores, as well-hydrated skin has a smoother texture and also a smoother, more even appearance, which helps pores show less. Moisturising also allows the skin barrier to function well, protecting the skin from irritants and minimising excessive sebum production, which can contribute to clogged pores.
4/ Sun protection: Thanks to sunscreens, we keep pores looking finer and less visible: “Prolonged exposure to the sun can damage the skin and degrade collagen and elastin, which are essential for firm skin and smaller pores. This sun damage also causes the outer layer, the epidermis, to thicken and pores to appear larger,” explains the professional.
5/ Face masks and homemade treatments: Incorporating them into your facial routine can be an effective and natural way to minimise the appearance of pores, as these treatments can help cleanse, exfoliate and nourish the complexion. “Clay helps absorb excess oil and remove impurities, activated charcoal draws out toxins and dirt, and citric acid acts as a natural exfoliant. The yoghurt and honey mask is recommended because it has lactic acid which helps with exfoliation, and the honey for its moisturising and antibacterial properties”.
6/ Professional treatments: In addition to home care, there are some professional treatments that can offer more noticeable results in the reduction of pores, always carried out by qualified personnel. We are talking about microdermabrasion (non-invasive and with results in just a few sessions), chemical peeling, whether superficial or deeper, and laser therapies to reduce the size of pores and improve the texture of the skin.
