Cloudy mornings, cold temperatures and coats mean that winter is here. A time of year when all you can think about is getting under a blanket and sipping a hot coffee. But, according to research, that’s not the only thing on our minds during winter.
LELO has shared with us a series of facts about why our sex lives are more active during the winter. Between December and February, attraction levels are highest, while June, July and August are the lowest of the year. Even people in long-term relationships find their relationships more attractive during the winter. But is there an explanation for this phenomenon? Researchers believe that during this time of year, when we wrap up warmer and our skin is less visible, it makes our bodies more exciting.
The most common birthday is 16 September, which means that most babies are conceived in December. On the other hand, August is when the fewest babies are conceived. Although this does not completely prove that winter is responsible for the increase in sexual activity, the Christmas holidays also mean an increase in condom sales. Twice as many condoms are sold the week before Christmas than the week after, which shows that during the winter we think mostly about having sex.
According to a study, there is a higher concentration and better quality of sperm during the winter months. This is because testosterone is the hormone responsible for low sex drive and an increase in testosterone is associated with a higher libido, i.e. more desire to have sex. Another decade-long study showed that during the holidays, people do more sex-related Google searches, such as pregnancy advice or pornography-related questions. Physically speaking, sex in winter also helps us generate heat.
