BABY BEN is the first single – as such – that KYNE releases after making us fall in love with her debut album SAD&HORNY, and as is characteristic of her, it tells us about something real. The track tells us the beginning of a story in which everything is going well until distance complicates it… he has to go to Oslo and she has to go to Barcelona, and the logistics make that BABY BEN stay in a “it couldn’t be”.
As for the music, Alba Arias – a UK-based producer from Madrid, who has worked with artists such as Julieta and PMP – contacted KYNE and they set up a studio session to see how they flowed. The connection was instant: on the first day Alba presented KYNE with a jazz-style chord wheel that she thought might suit him, and they started working on it. They modernise the keyboards, draw up new structures, and within a day they have a version very similar to what will be the final one.
Female power in the studio, which is long overdue. Finally, SokeThugPro, KYNE’s regular collaborator, joins the team for some final arrangements and mix. BABY BEN ends in a mix between r&b sensuality and trap strength, starring a chorus of super-pitched and almost incomprehensible vocals, which at the same time give a personal touch to the whole piece.
KYNE doesn’t conform to current industry norms. He’s all about craftsmanship and simmering, and it’s something he demonstrates with every release. It’s more worthwhile for him to make songs like BABY BEN, which will stick around and he’ll want to sing at his concerts 10 years from now, than to be ruled by the hyper-consumerist, fast-food-music industry. You decide what you prefer to listen to…
