Loewe SS23 Men: a hybrid between nature and technology

The latest Loewe Men SS23 fashion show has provoked a before and after in the fashion system, combining technology and nature like no other.

The last Loewe fashion show presenting the Spring / Summer SS23 collection has provoked a before and after in the fashion system. Like every season, Jonathan Anderson goes one step further. This time, the creative director reflects on the current society in which we live, creating a show in which nature and technology coexist in the best way.

We could say that this was one of the most powerful Menswear collections of Paris Fashion Week, if not the most powerful. A risky commitment to innovation that fuses technology and nature in a way that had never been done before. A visual spectacle that stood out because plants grew out of the garments, as well as incorporating technological elements such as screens.

Jonathan Anderson collaborated with Paula Ulargui Escalona, a Spanish fashion designer who has been experimenting with growing plants in fabrics, to create Loewe‘s plant-based clothing and shoes. Preparing the looks for the catwalk involved 20 days of supervised growing in a special polytunnel, so to our regret, these garments will not be sold.

In addition to this novelty, Anderson also embedded technological elements in some of the garments: a pair of blinking eyes, headphones, pen drives, a phone case, a flock of birds or a school of fish moving over multiple monitors. As if that wasn’t enough, the faces of some models were also obscured by screens.

“In a strange way, we are becoming the screen,” the designer reflected, describing how people are glued to devices, oblivious to the urban bustle or landscapes that unfold in real life. Moving on to another level: virtual reality. “It’s this idea of how nature can lead technology, or technology can lead nature.”

The new collection, which invites us to broaden our perceptions of how technology can affect nature and vice versa, includes new interpretations of classic garments. Sweatshirts, parkas or nappa leather jackets in vibrant colours were presented with looks that included bare legs or sporty tights, reminding us of the après-workout trend.
