Maria Grazia Chiuri celebrated craftsmanship with a lot of collaborations in an incredible show in Marrakech.
Cultural appropriation is dead. Long live cultural appreciation!
That was the message of the Dior Cruise show that took place last night, a proposal in which creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri collaborated with a large number of guest designers from the African continent and other continents in a shared tribute to craftsmanship.
The location of the exhibition, the remains of the magnificent El Badi palace, spoke of ancient dynasties and rulers. The clothing itself was a dialogue with today’s world, a celebration of globalization and inclusiveness.
Celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Shailene Woodley, Lupita Nyong’o or Diana Ross were among the approximately 800 guests who attended the mega-production, which took place shortly after sunset around a pile of water dotted with dozens of candles and seven burning braziers.
“In this moment in which we talk a lot about cultural appropriation, gender, postcolonialism, environment, as a fashion house, it is important to reflect on these issues and think about how we can start a different conversation with our audience,” said the designer.
With a hypnotic soundtrack of Jajouka musicians, accompanied by the British electronic band The Orb, a diverse cast of models walked in more than 110 looks ranging from the clear African influence to black evening dresses that carried the essence of Yves Saint Laurent.
