A commitment to diversity.

Mattel has launched its first autistic Barbie as part of its commitment to diversity. The doll joins the Barbie Fashionistas line, created to showcase different bodies, abilities and social realities.

The new model arrives in US shops this week. It adds to a collection that already includes dolls with Down syndrome, visual impairment, type 1 diabetes, vitiligo, prosthetics, hearing aids and different body types. The aim is for more children to see themselves reflected, or to recognise others, through play.

For its development, Mattel worked for more than 18 months with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. The collaboration sought to represent some of the ways people on the autism spectrum perceive and understand their surroundings. The company works from the idea that there is no single autism experience.

The Barbie includes several symbolic details. It features slightly averted eyes and articulated joints that allow repetitive movements. Its clothing is designed to reduce sensory stimulation. It also comes with noise-cancelling headphones, a fidget spinner and an alternative communication tablet. The facial features are inspired by women of Indian origin, aiming to give visibility to underrepresented communities.

The company states that this launch is part of a long-term strategy. Its goal is to adapt Barbie to today’s social reality. In the United States, one in every 31 eight-year-old children has an autism diagnosis. With this doll, Mattel aims to normalise diversity from an early age.
