Nicki Minaj has publicly stated that Jay-Z owes her between $100 million and $200 million for her involvement with Tidal. The artist made the claims via her X account. All of this in a series of posts where she also questioned the financial treatment she received after the sale of the platform.
Tidal was launched in 2015 with an initial investment that included fifteen artists. They included Minaj, Beyoncé, Rihanna, J. Cole and Ye. Each received 3% equity when the company was valued at $56 million. In 2021, Jack Dorsey’s platform was sold to Square for $302 million.
According to Minaj, she and the other artists retained their stake, but the figure she was offered for her share was $1 million. This would be a far cry from the approximately nine million that would correspond to 3% of the sale. Taking into account the company valued at the price of Square’s sale.
Nicki Minaj estimated that Jay-Z owes her between 100 and 200 million and urged him to settle that ‘karmic debt’. However, she said Jay-Z is still one of her top five favourite artists. Minaj also addressed the ‘Hov’ nickname fans use to call the rapper. She said that those who use it ‘will answer to God for blasphemy’.
In addition, the artist assured that, if she receives the money she is claiming, she will use it to help her fans financially through her charity Student Of The Game. The foundation covers college tuition and student loans.
The statements continued on Thursday, when Minaj launched further criticism of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and his artist Megan Thee Stallion.
