The walls of the Museo Cerralbo are far from being the snowy, light and limitless surfaces to which contemporary exhibition spaces are accustomed. It is in this place, articulated by hundreds of voices frozen in canvases, busts, sculptures, medallions and cabinets, that Filip Custic acts.
On the walls of the museum, the artist offers an accelerated itinerary through his past, presenting a retrospective exhibition that traces his production. filip custic is then reflected on the walls and, remembering the steps he has already taken, he returns to scratch the wounds that arose along the way.
His neo-baroque compositions, detailed and full of data, intoxicate the rooms while respectfully camouflaging themselves within the narrative of the space. The history of the place, porous and in movement, welcomes a liquid and affectionate work that slips through the cracks and locks of a place that welcomes it.
The Ballroom of the Museo Cerralbo, where stately music used to play and the heels of the guests clacked against the floor, now houses the latest work by Filip Custic: a venous bust, where the bronze of the effigy itself has liquefied to give life to other bodies. The artist thus questions the survival of monumental logics and affirms other ways of making.
This exhibition reaffirms the listening capacity of a museum interested not only in its present and its past, but also in the contemporary and its context. The space assumes the exhibition while the artist visits, far from the logic of the tourist, an interstice full of possibilities.
The exhibition, which can be visited from 6 July to 29 September, demonstrates the Museo Cerralbo’s interest in the visual arts and photography, programming annual exhibitions ranging from historical collections to contemporary creations. In this way, the collaboration with PHotoESPAÑA, which has been going on for more than a decade, continues.
It is not the only state museum under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture to participate in the photographic event. In its official section, the National Museum of Decorative Arts is also taking part, with ‘David Trullo. Álbum de salón y alcoba’; the Museo Nacional del Romanticismo, with ‘Las hijas de Minerva’ by Laura San Segundo and Alejandría Cinque; and the Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira, with ‘Perpetual Present’ by Sofía Crespo.
Filip Custic’s ephemeral metamorphosis continues with ‘Filip with wings’.
