Reddit brings back the r/place subreddit five years later

Thousands of people celebrated April Fools’ Day on Reddit, creating a canvas full of memes, tributes, references and drawings.

Thousands of Internet users have joined together for a good cause: to celebrate April Fools’ Day with Reddit. To do so, they have created a canvas full of memes, tributes, references and drawings.

Reddit has relaunched its creative initiative known as the r/place subreddit to celebrate April Fools’ Day. The first time this project was launched in 2017, and for this second edition more than three times as many people took part.

The idea is simple: Each user who wants to be part of r/place must design their own 1 pixel tile containing up to 16 colours and whose canvas must have a size of 1000×1000.

As many as 3.3 million internet users cast their vision on the new digital mural. From Discord servers to Twitch users, no one wanted to miss out on the opportunity. The result? A potpourri of memes, pop culture references and tributes to prominent figures.

r/place is an initiative that aims to bring together millions of people from all over the world for a common good: to create a work of art and to promote the Internet culture that is so essential today.
