Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Shiloh has decided to leave behind her father’s surname. On 19 August, a judge approved her request to change her name, People magazine confirmed. Shiloh, 18, born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, is now legally Shiloh Jolie.
She applied for the change in May, just as she came of age. She was born in Swakopmund, Namibia, on 27 May 2006, the first biological child of the iconic couple. Her older siblings are Maddox (22), Pax (20) and Zahara (19), while her younger siblings are twins Vivienne and Knox (15). According to his lawyer, Shiloh made this ‘independent and meaningful decision’ after going through complex situations.
The relationship between Pitt and Jolie continues to be marked by a troubled separation. Since Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 over ‘irreconcilable differences’, the former couple have been in a constant legal battle, with allegations of abuse, addiction issues and family tensions. Jolie alleged that Pitt engaged in abusive behaviour towards their son Maddox and that his history with alcohol and drugs affected his behaviour, culminating in an incident during a flight in 2016. This episode triggered the final separation.
Jolie’s lawyers recently reiterated that Pitt’s physical abuse began before that trip, but it was on the flight where it also involved her children. The situation has further deteriorated her relationship with her children, with whom she has little contact, according to People reports.
Shiloh’s decision to publicly disassociate herself from her father follows those of her other siblings, who have also stopped using the Pitt surname, either legally or symbolically. Vivienne, the youngest, dropped her father’s surname in the programmes of the Broadway musical The Outsiders, in which she worked as her mother’s assistant. Although Brad Pitt has made no official statement, sources close to him say he is ‘very upset’ about the situation, aware of the emotional distance from his children.
