The Y2K fashion revival is making a big splash, and the ‘dress over pants’ – that unmistakable dress over trousers look – has made a stellar comeback. The trend, which harks back to the Disney Channel’s young guns and Miley Cyrus’ first red carpet appearances, as well as the Anne Hathaway-esque looks behind “The Princess Diaries”, has been reimagined for summer 2024, making its way into streetwear as well as on the couture catwalks.
The first to revive the trend is Kylie Jenner, who dazzled in a Ferragamo ensemble at Paris Fashion Week. Jenner paired a red and white striped dress with flowing trousers. This combination was also seen on the runway for the Spring/Summer 2024 collection in shades of green, white and black. Ferragamo also presented a sheer white shirt dress over black trousers, adding a modern twist to this retro style.
The “dress over pants” is reinvented to align with current silhouettes and volumes, moving away from the Capri leggings and jeans of the 2000s. At the Academy Awards dinner organized by Louis Vuitton, Zendaya surprised with a metallic dress with a V-neckline over black pants, while Jennifer Lawrence showed her versatility with both casual and formal looks.
At the premiere of “Everyone Except You” in London, Lawrence opted for an asymmetrical dress over straight pants from The Row, and on the streets of New York, she combined navy blue pants from La Ligne with a long semi-transparent top. Gigi Hadid, meanwhile, paraded in the Big Apple with the “Showtime” dress from her own brand Guest In Residence and a pair of light denim.
Fashion historian Cassidy Zachary recounts in her podcast “Dressed: The History of Fashion” that around 1850, activists such as Amelia Jenks Bloomer and Elizabeth Cady Stanton scandalized society by combining garments associated with both genders. This combination included a long dress over wide Turkish-style trousers as an alternative to the voluminous skirts and corsets of the Victorian era. Although the fashion was seen as a challenge to social norms, the women who adopted it were ridiculed and nicknamed “bloomers” in honor of Jenks Bloomer.
Today, the “dress over pants” has been reinvented on the catwalks since the FW22 season. Nanushka opts for a sand-colored jumpsuit combined with trousers and a gray pencil skirt, while Chloé plays with leather skirts over straight pants. Givenchy creates an innovative fusion of trousers with high boots, and Peter Do extends the trend by incorporating pleated skirts into menswear. For SS24, Collina Strada stands out with large volumes and bold colours, Calcaterra adds a bohemian touch with long fringes, and Proenza Schouler experiments with transparencies and embroidery.
