The generational obsession with vintage fur coats

2024 opens a new era for this latent macro-trend in fashion.

The generational obsession with vintage fur coats

This updated way of wearing fur has transcended from the street to the catwalk, also projecting itself onto the immensity of the internet through social feeds in which it simulates a social status that often does not exist. Whether with a Loewe or a coat rescued from Humana.

The entire community that wears the piece in question now connects unconsciously to redefine or distort its traditional conception associated with luxury and the upper echelons of society. A collective resignification that opts for alternatives such as synthetic leather, or delves into the relentless search for second-hand real leather in vintage shops such as Vestiaire Collective. At the same time, the fashion system acts to introduce it into the capitalist cycle of algorithmic trends, leading brands to design new versions of synthetic fur, apparently created under a more sustainable approach.

Vintage fur coats have reached the collective desire of new generations who embrace opulence and maximalism through XXL iterations dressed in animal print or a myriad of colours and textures, whether for the neighbourhood tavern, the cocktail bar or the club after dark. The effect of the coat is powerful: the elevation of the look is unlocked regardless of whether the base is a tracksuit or a tailored suit.

In this sense, this new cult item took to the high fashion stage for House of Sunny’s pre-spring 2024, which presented two new fur coats in neutral shades of beige, cream and brown. The monochrome styles were presented in patchwork designs, fusing lightly coloured patches of fur with darker tones.

The H&M x Rabanne collection, on the other hand, versioned two brown leather jackets in different lengths, fusing Rabanne’s luxury with the Scandinavian brand’s classic outerwear silhouettes.
