It should come as no surprise that Amazon, known for its anti-union and anti-worker rights policies, has now taken things to even more Orwellian extremes.
The company plans to block certain words used within internal employee chat. Amazon decided on these words at a meeting between senior managers in November 2021. At the meeting, executives presented plans to launch an internal social media platform with a reward system. But staff apparently also emphasised that expressing even the slightest dissatisfaction with the dismal working conditions at Amazon would ruin the atmosphere of the app.
The following words and phrases are prohibited: hate, union, union, firing, firing, compensation, pay raise, bullying, harassment, I don’t care, rude, this is disturbing, stupid, this is dumb, prison, threat, petition, grievance, injustice, diversity, ethics, fairness, accessibility, vaccine, senior operations, living wage, representation, unfair, favouritism, tariff, TOT, unite, unity, plantation, slave, slave labour, master, stakeholder, freedom, bathrooms, robots, rubbish, committee, coalition. It’s a bit dystopian, to say the least.
