This is the inside of the world’s thinnest skyscraper

Located in the heart of Manhattan, right across from Central Park, is the world’s thinnest skyscraper designed by SHoP Architects.

It is a building of two adjacent structures linking Steinway Hall and a new 435-metre-high tower whose interior was designed by Studio Sofield. A total of 91 floors redefine the New York skyline with its elegant feather-like silhouette and a height-to-width ratio of 24:1.

The original building was built by the design firm Warren & Wetmore in 1925 and, one hundred years later, has been reimagined through light-filled living and entertainment spaces. In keeping with the original spirit, the limestone façade has been restored to retain the iconic forms of the golden age of skyscrapers in the Big Apple. In addition, glass panels clad the entire structure with bronze filigree.

Inside there are a total of 60 living units, including 46 full-floor flats and a duplex in the tower; a large garden terrace; a modernised version of the King Cole Bar; a 26-metre swimming pool; a paddle tennis court and numerous internal services.

“111 West 57th is a skyscraper both designed for the future and historically rooted in New York City through the temporality of its refined detailing and robust form,” says Dana Getman, principal of SHoP Architects.
