Treating late acne: products and recommendations

Acne is an inflammatory skin disease caused by a bacterial infection that occurs in the pilosebaceous follicles. Sebum accumulates in these follicles and at the same time, dead cells block the follicle, which prevents the oil from coming out, creating an ideal situation for the proliferation of microorganisms: ‘The problem is that the classic preparations for teenage acne are not suitable for more mature skin, as they dry it out excessively and require care that does not increase impurities or shine on the skin’, says Esperanza Sáenz, image manager of the cosmetics company Nezeni Cosmetics.

‘First of all, avoid very greasy cosmetics and make-up that doesn’t allow your skin to breathe. Don’t just look for those with a balancing action either, as the skin also needs hydration, and don’t try to exploit blemishes, as you will only manage to spread the lesion and cause marks or scars to appear’. Although the sun helps to dry out these lesions and improves them, it should always be used with oily free protection, without, of course, abandoning daily care, as the lesions will appear more intensely afterwards. The main factors that cause late acne are hormonal activity (menstruation), stress, certain drugs, unsuitable cosmetics and make-up or hereditary factors.

It’s very important to approach skin care with different techniques to achieve the best results: ‘First of all, the skin must be thoroughly cleansed with products that not only cleanse and remove impurities from the skin, but also help to moisturise and soothe, for example a cleansing gel and toner. In addition, a facial treatment should be carried out regularly to prevent the accumulation of dead cells from blocking the hair follicles, as they can obstruct the outflow of sebum and encourage the appearance’.

Among the natural ingredients to look for in our daily cosmetics are green tea, liquorice root and bakuchiol, a plant complex of oriental origin with astringent, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action: ‘We also recommend preparations based on liposomes, which, as well as balancing the skin, help us with flaccidity, wrinkles and dilated pores’. It is very important to emphasise the patience and perseverance required to carry out a treatment, and we must set our objective in the medium to long term.

Some products we recommend are: ‘Dot the Spot Gel for localised pimples by Oddities’, a night lotion “Clear-Out by Clarins”, the serum that rejuvenates while perfecting “Age-Purify Intensive Double Correction Serum by Filorga”, the eraser effect serum “Primary Solution Serum by Valmont”, ‘Sisley’s Tropical Resins Purifying and Balancing Lotion, Yves Saint Laurent’s Pure Shots Night Reboot Anti-Acne and Anti-Aging Night Serum, Benefit’s POREfessional Deep Retreat Deep Cleansing Mask, the best for accelerating the healing process, Roll-On Spot S. O.S by Germaine de Capuccini’, 3-in-1 cleanser “White Tea Skin Solutions Gentle Purifying Cleanse by Elizabeth Arden”.
