Recently, Elon Musk has decided to withdraw Twitter from the voluntary EU Code of Practice against disinformation.
The French Minister for Digital Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, wanted to emphasize through the social network in question the importance of following regulations to avoid dangerous fake news on social networks.
Barrot told France Info: “Disinformation is one of the most serious threats to our democracies. If Twitter repeatedly breaches our rules, it will be banned from entering the EU.”
European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton also weighed in on the social network: “Twitter leaves EU voluntary Code of Practice against disinformation. But the obligations remain. You can run but you can’t hide.” Twitter points to a cessation of its activity in Europe if it does not change its decision regarding disinformation.
A new regulation called the Digital Services Act (DSA) to monitor and control disinformation is expected to come into force in the EU in August. The agreement is voluntary, but social networks must comply with it if they want to continue operating in European territory. Musk, who continues to advocate transparency and freedom of expression, has not made statements about the possible banning of Twitter in the EU.
