Next year, a law will come into force that forces Apple and Google to allow third-party app stores on their operating systems.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, said in an interview with the Financial Times that the brand wants to “be in a position to deliver Xbox and both our own and third-party content across any screen that someone wants to play on.” With this, it could be understood that the digital game library could come to iPhone and Android soon.
Currently, Microsoft offers its digital games through PC and Xbox apps. On iOS or Android devices it is possible to access these services, but in a roundabout way; through the web browser rather than from a dedicated app.
The Digital Markets Act will come into force in March 2024, and will force Apple and Google to allow third-party app stores, such as Microsoft, within their operating systems. “The Digital Markets Act is about to go into effect. That’s the kind of thing we’re planning,” Spencer said. While Apple will try to fight this, the tech giant could offer iPhone users the Xbox Games Store.
