The new Gucci Bamboo 1947, designed by Alessandro Michele and inspired by the iconic Bamboo bag, joins the Gucci Beloved collections. To mark the launch of the new line, 11 international designers shared their own vision of the bag by creating a work of art featuring the accessory. Through a series of photographs, illustrations, paintings and videos, the line is brought to life from a myriad of prisms, each with their own version of the reinterpreted icon.

With the historic Bamboo bag as a source of inspiration and a contemporary approach, Alessandro Michele presents the new Gucci Bamboo 1947. Now part of the distinctive Gucci Beloved lines, this celebrated design connects past, present and future and is a reiteration of Gucci’s heritage and a continuation of his legacy as creative director of the House. It is the creative director’s initiative to extract archival elements and reinterpret them through a contemporary prism.

In 1947 – in a post-war Italy plagued by a shortage of raw materials – the founder of the House, Guccio Gucci, with the help of his visionary Florentine craftsmen, decided to use bamboo, a light and durable material, as a handle for a bag. And so one of Gucci’s great emblems was born. Over the following decades, the Bamboo bag became a symbol among the most influential women in Hollywood and the international jet set, establishing itself globally as a true icon of innovation.

To launch the new line, the House invited 11 international creators to collaborate on a digital project. They were asked to share their own vision of the Gucci Bamboo 1947 by creating a work of art featuring the bag. Through a series of photographs, illustrations, paintings and videos, the line is brought to life through a myriad of prisms, each with their own version of the reinterpreted icon.

The new version of the top-handle Bamboo bag features interchangeable leather straps and triband, adding a contemporary twist to its sophisticated silhouette, available in a range of sizes and a vibrant colour palette. Guest creators include photographers Maddalena Arcelloni, Lou Escobar, Katya Mayer, Theo Liu Xiangyu, Cho Gi-Seok and Suzanne Saroff and artists Nico Ito, Samson Bakare and Everett Glenn. The rest of the names who have contributed to the project will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The top handle bag comes in three sizes – medium, small and mini – and a choice of three materials: natural leather, white leather and black patent leather. The small and mini models are also available in a vibrant palette of colours including bright orange, marigold yellow, pink, sky blue and bright green. Crocodile and python versions enrich the line’s precious leather offerings.

Presented in different combinations that evoke simple, luxurious, fun and disruptive attitudes, all sizes and colours feature a classic leather strap, and also incorporate a practical triband shoulder strap. Both are adjustable and detachable, making this model a truly versatile accessory, ideal for all occasions.

The Gucci Bamboo 1947 has the exceptional craftsmanship of the original model. The top handle and clasp are made from carefully selected bamboo pieces – based on Gucci’s design specifications – sanded, shaped and finished by hand.

The Gucci Bamboo 1947 bag is available in selected Gucci shops as well as on gucci.com.
