According to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, Netflix will insert ads on its platform next year or perhaps the year after. This decision is motivated by the early 2022 hecatomb: a massive loss of subscribers for the first time since 2011 and a huge stock market drop.
From the platform creator of series such as Stranger Things or Élite, they affirm that they lost around 700,000 clients when they withdrew from Russia. They have also lost another 600,000 customers in the United States and Canada. The latter was largely due to the price increase of the streaming service.
Netflix has insisted that it will try to curb password sharing later this year. But it won’t be the only controversial move. The company has officially stated that it will add a cheaper ad-supported package in 2023 or 2024.
“Advertising is a very exciting opportunity for us,” said Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix.
The debate is open.
