If you’ve been scrolling through social media lately, you’ve probably seen Loewe’s latest innovation. The luxury brand has revolutionized the system with a new form of craftsmanship, transforming orange peels into fabrics thanks to Orange Fiber and Pyratex. But what are these fibers?
Loewe’s latest collection champions sustainability around circular fashion with the help of Pyratex, a Madrid-based textile R&D company specializing in high-performance fabrics made with natural, biological, and recycled fibers. From banana, nettle, and seaweed waste or scraps, to citrus fruits, which are the mainstay of its production.
Loewe’s summer line made with citrus fruits comes from orange peel waste, giving food waste a new lease on life. Pyratex machines and transforms them into threads with refreshing, antibacterial, UV-protective and thermoregulatory properties.
The orange peel tops or pieces designed by the Spanish firm acquire a slight orange hue due to the peel content and/or the dye, as well as a highly functional character due to the lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking material.
