It is undeniable that product authentication is a serious problem at both the industrial and federal levels. The number of counterfeit goods increases every year. In August of this year, the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection confiscated more than 5,300 counterfeit goods at Los Angeles International Airport in a single day. Of these, 1,263 were fake handbags.
In 2017, total seizures of handbags and wallets were valued at over 212 million euros. But all this is about to come to an end. LVMH is aware of this problem, which causes it so many headaches and millions in losses. Therefore, in the third edition of their program “La Maison des Startups” have selected a very interesting participant.
It is called “Entrupy” (@entrupy) and is an app capable of detecting a forgery through artificial intelligence. This service would help prevent counterfeit items from entering the supply chain.
Entrupy specializes in luxury handbags and, for the moment, can already verify 15 different brands: Chanel, Celine, Bottega Veneta, Coach, Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Burberry, Hermès, Goyard, Prada, Chloe, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton.
Using the app is very simple. Just place your configured Entrupy iPod in your bag, take a couple of pictures and receive the results in real time. The artificial intelligence system collects more than 500 reference points per bag to determine in less than 4 seconds if it is authentic or not.
Thanks to LVMH, Entrupy will have the opportunity to collaborate with government organizations, retailers, online stores and even resale pages in the hope of combating the thriving counterfeiting market.
No one knows exactly what motivates approximately 3 million people a year to spend real money on artificial design products. Maybe it’s the fictitious feeling of success, taste and wealth. And the truth is that it is curious to see how all those perceptions can come contained and concentrated in a small Dior bag.
