Balenciaga SS21: a journey to the end of the world

Demna Gvasalia’s proposal for Balenciaga SS21 is a great post-pandemic mood. We analysed the key aspects of the collection.

Demna Gvasalia’s proposal for Balenciaga SS21 is a great post-pandemic mood. Between the darkness of the streets of Paris and the rhythm of Corey Hart ‘I Wear My Sunglasses At Night’, the cast of models walked through the end of the world ‘a dressable wardrobe’ for the spring/summer season. Has the apocalypse arrived yet?

The 59 looks couldn’t be more Demna. The creative director emphasizes again the extravagant garments, re-imagining new pieces for the outsider: jumpers, oversized graphic T-shirts, car coats, as well as an earth-friendly garment tour. Sustainability becomes a key element in the collection (93.5% of the materials are sustainable or recycled).

Apart from reducing the environmental impact, SS21 is a unisex production that dilutes gender barriers. Could there definitely be something more post-pandemic?

The luxury house includes in the pre-collection a series of loungewear elements: from bathrobes to sweatpants or pyjamas, recontextualizing the basic elements of quarantine. In fact, if we go down to the footwear, we can see how Gvasalia takes a slippery route to the street. Besides, the heels of the proposal join the iconic archive of ugly shoes of the brand.

Among the accessories, the night sunglasses stand out, conceptually in tune with the soundtrack of the fashion film. In fact, the entire cast is equipped with bug-eyed glasses to travel through the sinister streets of the city.

Take a look at the complete Balenciaga SS21 collection in the images, as well as in the apocalyptic video directed by Walter Stern.
