The British Fashion Awards unfolded last night at London’s Royal Albert Hall, bringing together celebrities and iconic designers with the best emerging talent.
The British Fashion Awards 2021 gala, held just a month after announcing the nominees, featured a tribute to the posthumous African-American designer Virgil Abloh, who still has the industry in shock. Abloh’s friend Idris Elba delivered a heartfelt speech in honor of the visionary designer, along with a poem by Maya Angelou entitled “When Great Trees Fall”.
The evening’s presenters, including Billy Porter, Alton Manson, and Adut Akech, presented the awards to all the winners, who were chosen by a panel of editors, stylists, and buyers. Kim Jones, creative director of Dior Men and Fendi, won the “Designer of the Year” award, while Nensi Dojaka was crowned with the “BFC Foundation Award“.
In addition, the Fashion Awards recognized 15 designers, brands, and creatives who brought positive change to the industry across three categories: Creativity, Environment and People. The Fashion East community, and its founder, Lulu Kennedy, was honored for her work as recruiter and ambassador of the platform for new design talent in a space with no dividing lines between fashion, nightlife and art.
