Charles Jeffrey debuts at Milan Fashion Week with his LOVERBOY FW23 collection in which he pays homage to acclaimed writer John Byrne.

After presenting a collection influenced by New York’s No Wave scene, collaborating with Fred Perry and George Cox and launching a selection of homeware, Charles Jeffrey is finally going international with his LOVERBOY brand. And what better way to do it than during MFW and celebrating one of John Byrne‘s most outstanding works: ‘The Slab Boys’.

His new proposal for this season, entitled ‘Engine Room’, celebrates the Scottish writer’s art: “the unique combination of gritty realism, satire and surreal fantasy that permeates all of John Byrne’s work is a rich reference point for Charles Jeffrey’s original concept”.

In this way, the collection was conceived as a work divided into three parts under the same premise where models with a dirty and unkempt appearance paraded in an industrial machine room. There was no shortage of references to the industrial revolution in the form of nails and lanterns. The second round featured the “POSERS” of LOVERBOY: a daring gang in killer outfits featuring claws, checkered prints and patent leather trousers.

Finally, there were the “SNAKES”, whose eerie outfits included cut-outs from The Scottish Basic newspaper and intermingled bright colours such as satin red, black and white.

“I was very inspired by Byrne’s film The Slab Boys. For me, this collection is a celebration of Scotland, the working man, the renaissance man, the woman, or anything in between. It’s a chance to be authentic in a new space, it’s like meeting someone new and re-exposing yourself. I think we achieved a lot in London and the choice to come to Milan felt very right; it’s an industrial city and that suited the collection very well, says Charles.
