Since deciding to open his own studio in 2020, Gustaf Westman—an architect by training, a designer by conviction—has been steadily building a universe that is instantly recognisable at first scroll: XXL curves, chunky objects and an aesthetic that has won over both interior designers and TikTok.
His Stockholm headquarters has become an incubator for pieces that seem to play with scale: oversized cups, rounded plates and puffed-up glasses in a whole range of pop colours. Now, Westman is taking a step that he himself describes as a ‘childhood dream come true’: signing his first collaboration with IKEA.
At the beginning of the summer, the first piece in the collection was leaked—the now iconic Meatball Plate. Today, at last, we can see the complete collection: 12 pieces that are part of the Vinterfint winter line, the Swedish multinational’s annual limited edition offering that reinvents festive traditions.
‘My designs have never fit in with that classic idea of Scandinavian Christmas, so I had my doubts. In the end, together with IKEA, we came up with a concept that is not about tradition but about celebration and hospitality.’ The collection ranges from plates and cups to candlesticks and lighting, with a colour palette that balances Westman’s DNA with seasonal touches: yes, there is green and red, but also bubblegum pink and baby blue.
For Maria O’Brian, creative leader at IKEA Sweden, the partnership was inevitable: ‘We wanted to explore a more playful and inclusive vision of the holidays. Westman’s language of colour and form is very IKEA, but at the same time it breaks with everything.’
Westman has capitalised on the content era, putting his bold aesthetic on the global radar just as a new generation began to obsess over interiors. His thick shapes and vibrant colours are already staples in influencers’ homes and Pinterest mood boards, and now IKEA is making that aesthetic more accessible.
IKEA family members will have exclusive access to purchase items on 19 September at selected pre-sale events. From 20 September onwards, the collection will be available to the rest of the world.
