IKEA launches together with social enterprise Little Sun a collection of solar-powered LED lamps.
The organization founded by artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen, Little Sun is dedicated to providing solar power to communities without regular access to electricity, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Together with IKEA, the social enterprise is launching a collection of solar-powered LED lamps.
The range, called SAMMANLÄNKAD, includes two options: one for indoors and one practical for outdoor adventures. The design of the table lamp is inspired by the sun and the movement of The Earth around it, shaped like a half-sphere. The metal structure holds the light source, and being adjustable, it can be used as a pendant or table lamp. The light source can even be removed from the stand and serve as a flashlight.
The smaller portable lamp is practical for outdoor use; it can be hung from a window or backpack by its yellow strap for charging during daylight hours. Both lamps include solar panels and rechargeable batteries, and the table lamp can be charged through a power outlet as well via its USB-A and USB-C ports when not charging in the sun. The lamps’ battery can also be used to charge a cell phone.
“The collaboration with IKEA supports our mission to raise awareness about energy access and reminds us that we have the potential to shape our world,” Eliasson recounted in a press release. “If we want to move to a renewables-powered world in the next decade, we need everyone to recognize the opportunity of solar energy. Sunlight is seemingly invisible, but solar energy allows us to make the invisible visible.”
“With this collaboration, we wanted to start a conversation about solar energy and put the power of the sun in the hands of many people,” added James Futcher, creative director at IKEA. “We share the belief that the possibilities of thoughtful design lie in its ability to raise awareness and make a difference.”
The collection will be available this April in IKEA stores.
