IKEA is once again backing inflatable furniture. The Swedish company has decided to bring back a piece many people remember from years ago, the inflatable chair. This time, however, it’s not just a playful novelty, but a design with a clear purpose. It was unveiled at the Milan Design Week as part of the new PS 2026 collection, aiming to show that something simple and affordable can also be practical, attractive and more environmentally friendly.
Designer Mikael Axellson has significantly reworked the concept. It is no longer just air-filled plastic. The chair now features a steel frame, a green textile cover and an internal system of air chambers that make it sturdier and more comfortable. This solves common issues from the past, such as sagging, squeaking or slipping. In short, it feels closer to a “proper” chair, while using less material.
The main idea is straightforward: making the most of something as basic as air. IKEA has also chosen to include a manual pump instead of an electric one, keeping costs down and avoiding unnecessary electronic waste. It may take a bit longer to assemble, but in return you get a simpler, cheaper and more sustainable product.
The IKEA PS 2026 collection is scheduled for a global release in May.
