In response to a socially distant world, MM6 Maison Margiela comes to challenge us with its AW21 collection. The brand goes back to its origins and bases its collection on the idea of going against what has been previously established in fashion and turning things upside down.
Turning everything upside down since its creation in 1988, the brand presents its collection through a fashion film set in a 1920s Parisian cabaret. Dark nightclubs where, a century ago, avant-garde artists, musicians and writers gathered to drink, smoke and dance. In a spirit of reversion, the film begins with what would mark the end of a show, amidst applause and confetti.
MM6 Maison Margiela AW21 transforms today’s fashion, reinventing basics with exposed seams and outer labels. Walking to the rhythm of piano tunes, functional and avant-garde designs begin to appear on the catwalk. But the garments are turned inside out, from the linings, labels, to the constructions of the garments.
From jeans to frayed jacquard fabrics, upside-down handbags and coats. Among the accessories, pearl earrings and upside-down rings. And of course, MM6 Maison Margiela has collaborated with Eastpack for accessories. The brand’s iconic fanny packs and backpacks are turned inside out to reveal a collage of customised patches.
In the MM6 Maison Margiela AW21 candlelit cabaret, nothing is what it seems.
