Following Jean Paul Gaultier’s retirement from the catwalks in January 2020, the fashion house has delegated the design of its garments to a “guest designer”. Now, it is the turn of Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain.
Chitose Abe, founder and creative director of Sacai, and Glenn Martens, creative director of Y/Project and Diesel, have handed over to Olivier Rousteing to shape a new Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture collection. In it, the maison’s codes will be reinterpreted through the eyes of the young designer and in collaboration with the Gaultier house team.
“I have always been obsessed and inspired by the world of Jean Paul Gaultier,” says Rousteing after presenting his latest collection for Balmain at Paris Fashion Week. “I think he brought so much to the world and to the fashion industry. What I love about his aesthetic is all the incredible tailoring, the cuts, the craftsmanship, the savoir-faire and the incredible glamour and sensuality that he brought to the catwalk,” he adds.
In this way, JPG’s Autumn/Winter 2022 collection will reflect the values of inclusion and diversity that have always marked the company’s mission.
And speaking of Olivier Rousteing… Have you seen the latest Balmain collection?
