Stella McCartney Pride 22: an ode to her iconic Met Gala look

To celebrate Pride month, Stella McCartney is launching a campaign featuring SS22 pieces inspired by her iconic Met Gala look.

To celebrate Pride month, Stella McCartney is campaigning SS22 pieces inspired by her iconic 1999 Met Gala carpet look as a tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community.

In 1999, Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney appeared on the Met Gala red carpet in a pair of sleeveless T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “Rock Royalty”. The now iconic look was made 24 hours before the event incorporating studs, ribbons and rhinestone lettering. This so-vulgar-its-good trend synonymous with the 2000s is one that was adopted 30 years later by the queer community.

“Y2K fashion is about wearing whatever you want, no matter how vulgar it looks, and I love it,” says new face Mikey Mendoza, who recreated the look with stylist Mina Galan for Stella McCartney’s Pride 2022 campaign. The campaign connects with the nature of East London and represents a sense of infinite strength, reclaiming a space not normally associated with the queer community, creating radical dichotomy of visuals and tones.

A detail that is essential to the project is that all the people who participated in the Pride 2022 set identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Photographed by Jacqueline Landvik, whose work explores the relationship between nature and transfemininity, Mikey Mendoza and Mina Gálan join model Coumba Samba to present the SS22 collection during l Pride month.
