The electric vehicle maker will partner with payments firm Block Inc and Blockstream to mine Bitcoin using a solar-only infrastructure it will soon build.
Plans for a solar-powered mining facility were first announced in June last year, but Tesla‘s involvement was kept under wraps until now. Blockstream CEO Adam Back said the automaker will be in charge of building the entire infrastructure and will use its own Megapack batteries.
This is a big step for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. The practice has long been criticised for its immense impact on the environment due to the large amount of energy required. However, Tesla’s shift towards using renewable energy will set a good precedent for the rest of the industry. What do you think about it?
